Guarded by strict use requirements, the Supima� trademark is licensed to be used on only the finest quality products marketed in high-end retail stores and catalogs.
Simply stated, Supima�cotton is the finest in the world. Supima�cotton is grown only in the American Southwest and represents just 2% of the US cotton production. The staple length of cotton determines the ultimate strength and durability of the end use product. An Extra-Long Staple (ELS) cotton fiber is a designation for fibers at least 1 3/8" in length. U.S Pima cotton fiber is among the longest cotton staple lengths in the world with an average length exceeding 1 7/16". This rare fiber can be spun into longer, finer and stronger yarns. The superior strength of Supima� cotton allows even finer yarns to be spun, which imparts a more luxurious appearance and softness of hand.This yarn also allows for better color registration and added luster to the shirts we produce. All of this results in a shirt that is softer, silkier and more durable.
The first commercial crop of Pima cotton � named after the local Pima Indians � was harvested in Arizona in 1912. However it was not until 1951 that a technological breakthrough ushered Pima cotton into a new era. On going commercial seed development continues to generate cotton with improved fiber characteristics.
Today Supima� cotton is produced by a limited number of growers in Arizona, El Paso, Texas, Las Cruses, New Mexico, and the San Joaquin Valley of California. The Supima grower is a specialist in producing premium quality extra-long staple cotton, Like the Pima Indians before them, Supima growers have a special intimacy with the land that nurtures the cotton. They know and understand the soil and climatic conditions necessary to raise the finest cotton in the world.
